Míyaxwe, Who Am I ?

  

Míyaxwe (hello), I am an enrolled member of the Cahuilla Band of Indians. I live on the Cahuilla Indian Reservation with my husband Terry Hughes. I am blessed to have 4 children, 9 grandchildren (with one on the way). After 25 + years in Tribal Gaming as a Gaming Commissioner and an Executive Director, I set new goals for 2022, launching my own consulting company C.E.C.H. Consulting and enrolling in a Masters of Legal Studies at Arizona State University, Sandra Day O’Conner College of Law with a focus in Indian Gaming and Tribal Self-Governance, with a goal of teaching the next generation of tribal leaders and tribal gaming regulators at the University level.

My Story

Experience

  I graduated from Haskell Indian Junior College (Haskell Indian Nations University) and from the University of Phoenix with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice.  My professional career spans 35+ years in Tribal Governance and 25 + years in the regulationof tribal gaming. I have served my tribe as Tribal Chairwoman and Tribal Council Member; currently, I serve as Secretary for the Cahuilla Economic Development Corporation. The future is our youth and the strength of our families; therefore, I serve my Tribe as Chair of the Cahuilla Youth and Family Committee and member of the Cahuilla Scholarship Committee. My passion is tribal gaming regulation, tribal sovereignty, and tribal self-governance.   

Approach

My approach is to teach, coach, and mentor. I collaborate with Tribal Gaming Commissions to ensure that the end result is empowered staff. Services are developed specific to each Gaming Commission.  

Why My Company?

Hands on and lived experiences in Tribal Governance, Tribal Gaming, and Tribal Economic Development. An experienced tribal gaming regulator who understands the unique intricacies faced by Gaming Commissions. I have a solid foundation and understanding of tribal regulations, Tribal-State Compact, the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act and the National Indian Gaming Commissions’ regulations. I have extensive experience drafting and applying tribal internal controls and regulations.   Most recently served as the Chair of the Natinal Tribal Gaming Commission Regulators CJIS Task Force,
